Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is a Christ-centered, nationally ranked, liberal arts university. Within a caring community, our mission as Christian educators is to help our students reach their full potential as educated citizens and worldwide servant-leaders. We offer over 50 undergraduate majors and 14 graduate degrees. Our university is student-oriented and faculty never feel out of reach with a 12:1 student/faculty ratio. Student Life
The student body at Carson Newman represents 44 states and 55 nations, bringing a world of cultures to our East Tennessee campus. We are located between two beautiful lakes, 35 minutes to the bustling city of Knoxville, and 40 minutes to the Great Smoky Mountains. When students aren’t in class, they may be found hiking, biking, hanging out in local coffee shops (on and off campus), or enjoying a day at nearby Dollywood theme park! While on campus, students enjoy our Maddox Student Activities Center (MSAC), a 96,000-square-foot facility featuring three full-size gyms, an indoor running track, game rooms, weight, cardio and gymnastics rooms, and a swimming pool. In 2024-2025, the University opened a new student recreation park highlighted by sand volleyball and pickleball, and basketball courts, as well as a softball field and soccer pitch. It also opened West Campus Commons, a twin-building residence life complex featuring 524 beds. The buildings are coupled by a two-story “Community Connector,” featuring a large gathering and gaming space on the first floor, while study space is designated for the second floor.
In addition to West Campus Commons, Carson-Newman offers five residence halls and two apartment buildings for those seeking on-campus living. First-year students are able to live in West Campus Commons, while returning students and transfer students may request to live elsewhere. All of our residence halls include laundry facilities, communal TV rooms, and most include communal kitchens.
Carson-Newman also offers over 40 student organizations ranging from theatre to business leadership to worship. Students can network with industry professionals, minister to the local community, or just have fun and relax with an activity that interests them.
The Global Education program seeks to increase the sense of community on campus by strengthening the international and intercultural dimensions of the campus through a diverse range of curricular and co-curricular programs, like the Global Education Summer Culture Camp.
