Tennessee is located in the southeastern part of the United States. People who live here are called "Tennesseans." We are bordered on the west by the fabled and historic Mississippi River, and on the east by the enchantingly beautiful Appalachian Mountains.

Tennessee Climate
Tennessee has a temperate climate, with warm summers and mild winters. However, the state's varied topography leads to a wide range of weather conditions. In the Memphis area, the annual average temperatures are 40°F (4°C) in January, and 83°F (28°C) in July. In the Nashville area, the annual average temperatures are 36°F (2°C) in January to 79°F (26°C) in July. The Knoxville area has average temperatures of 41°F (5°C) in January and 78°F (26°C) in July.
Severe storms occur infrequently. The greatest rainfall occurs in the winter and early spring, especially March. September and October are typically the driest months. Snowfall does occur but is more prevalent in East Tennessee than in the western Tennessee. Nashville receives approximately 10 inches of snow (25.4 cm) per year. In comparison, Memphis generally sees only 5 in (12.7 cm) annually.
